SLOCAN OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN
Slocan, BC · 2022
With the last OCP update having been completed in 2011, and the closure of the Springer Creek Mill during that time, the Village of Slocan was due to update it’s Official Community Plan. With an ambitious 8 month timeline, Selkirk Planning & Design lead a dynamic team to complete the update. Extensive community engagement that included
advisory group meetings, stakeholder meetings, youth workshops, open houses, two community surveys, and a rainy walking tour, informed the plan to make sure that it fit the needs of the community. The plan presented diverse housing form options graphically, and assessed their appropriateness for Slocan by illustrating 4 different development scenarios for the community. The final solution balanced the need for more housing, with the desire to see the distinct community The plan brought in new environmental protection areas, a series of new maps that planned out future infrastructure improvements, and innovative land use policy. The plan permits up to four units per lot everywhere in Slocan, allowing units to be added at a scale that the community was comfortable with. The former mill site has a policy framework that will support a more in-depth Mill Site Master Plan to come. Community-wide policy incorporated walkability, beachfront improvements, cultural sup-ports, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
The plan was adopted in October 2022 with unanimous Council support. The plan was well supported by the
community, Council, and staff due to the significant community engagement throughout the project.
