Canal Flats Parks, Recreation & Trails Strategy

SPD and LARCH collaborated to create the Village of Canal Flat’s first Parks, Recreation & Trails Strategy in late 2019. The project included 6 phases and considered the current and future needs for Parks, Recreation & Trails within the Village, and how they can connect regionally to larger trail networks to support the Village’s transition to a diverse economy built on providing amenity to residents and visitors.

The Strategy compiled an inventory of existing assets, and assessed current capacity and future needs through an Urban Design Analysis that graphically analyzed existing assets, issues and opportunities. Two different community engagement activities throughout the process provided valuable information on future needs for recreation uses, with residents discussing and voting for their favourites. The plan produced several maps guiding future parks, recreation and trail development within the community. A GIS database of existing parks, trails and infrastructure will be used to continue to implement the plan.

The plan was very well received and Village staff used the plan to apply for funding to begin implementation.
